After the success of last year’s even, the Altra West Highland Way Race wil again be virtual due to the ongoing Covid restrictions.

ALTRA Virtual West Highland Way Race

00:01 Friday 11th June –12:00 Noon Sunday 20th June 2021

We know how much so many of you enjoyed last years virtual West Highland Way Race, so we are doing it again with a couple of exciting new changes. AND with entry a nominal £5 plus optional charity donation, we feel we are the best £ per mile virtual event going!

This is an opportunity to virtually run, walk or crawl the 95 miles (155km) distance of the West Highland Way while imagining yourself travelling along Scotland’s iconic long distance trail. We will be asking you to follow government guidelines for the period of the race. This year with guidelines being relaxed, we hope it gives some of you the opportunity to get out on The Way itself and log a few miles or explore some new trails wherever you are. You should even be able to form your own small “Bubbles” to run with.

Like all virtual events, it relies on honesty from everyone, just getting out there, logging some miles as accurately as you can, and having some serious fun too.

The two main changes are the ability to upload your strava data to the SI platform and the splitting of the race into two legs as opposed to three.

The event starts at one second past midnight on Friday morning 11th June and ends Midday Sunday 20th June. Runners have 9.5 days to complete the 95 miles.

We are actively discouraging anyone from running 95 miles in one go.

The virtual run allows runners to run 95 miles, over 9.5 days, either individually, as a semi competitive 3 runner team relay, or as a multi team fun relay.

In a change from last year, you will just have one mid race checkpoint to reach, as well as the finish in Fort William. You run segments of your choosing, by the 2 check point cut offs, and then upload your detail to SI systems as you reach the checkppints.

Checkpoints are at

Milngavie to Tyndrum-  Leg 1: Total 53 miles that must be completed in 5 days  by midnight Tuesday 15th June

Tyndrum – Fort William Leg 2:  42 miles, in 4 and a half days giving a total of 95 miles to be completed by midday Sun 20th June.

With the relaxing of travel and guidelines, the quick thinking amongst you will appreciate while we are not encouraging anyone to run 95 miles in one go, it does give the opportunity, if you own time and situation allows, to run 2 long runs on either weekend, as well as the go as you please option.

The SI events team will update a leaderboard as soon as practical after each stage deadline, so you can all have fun watching each other too!

For those not familiar with the full trail route, info is on the regular Race website.  http://westhighlandwayrace.org

YOU decide your strategy according to your available time and ambitions. Run and enjoy long single stages or break it down in smaller (and possibly faster) stages – your own imagination is your only guide. With the relaxing of travel and guidelines, the quick thinking amongst you will appreciate while we are not encouraging anyone to run 95 miles in one go, it does give the opportunity, if you own time and situation allows, to run 2 long runs on either weekend, as well as the go as you please option

SOLO RUNNERS – YOU will be responsible for uploading your results at the end of each stage.

Your entry confirmation e mail gives details on how to enter your results.

Please take a few minutes to understand the virtual event and what it involves, before entering. Running isn’t cancelled, it is just adapting.

No overall prizes, but spot prizes awarded in an ad hoc simple fashion by the race and sponsors, details TBC

There is NO facility to upload a strava link or simlar but the organising team reserve the right to ask for any data confirmation. should we spot any obvious “outlier performances:-)”

The entry fee covers admin costs by the race and SiEntries in setting up the platform.

This year we are supporting the charity ‘Play for Change’ in memory of our dear friend John Kynaston.

The West Highland Way race continues to be a not for profit event, run by volunteers. We have kept the cost of entry to this year’s virtual WHW Race very low and any surplus funds will be donated to ‘Play for Change’, a charity suggested by Katrina, Jo, Emma, Laura and Hollie Kynaston.

Play for Change is an International Sport for Development Charity, which has the goal of enhancing life opportunities for under-privileged children by using the powerful values of sport.  We believe that raising funds for this charity will be a lovely way for us to remember John, and for us all to recognise the impact his life had through his work abroad, his work in sport, and his work with children.  Please donate generously.
