Local Dumbarton runner who loves the hills, mud and running with friends / meeting fellow, like-minded runners.

Ultra History

Started with Clydestride in 2014 with ultimate goal being the Fling at some point.  Have since managed the Fling in 2015 / 2016 and have also completed Devil, River Ayr Way, Clydestride (again), Jedburgh, D33 and WHW race.

Why WHW?

Once you start running on the WHW you catch the bug.  You complete the Fling and drop to your knees at the finish line thinking how did I manage that.  You then complete the Devil and the same thing happens.  You can’t help but think, could I actually combine both races and complete the whole distance.  I remember running in the relay in 2015, passing some of the full WHW race competitors and being in such awe thinking, these guys and girls are superhuman.  6 months later I had thrown my hat in the ring with a few friends and we were lucky enough to make the cut.  Experience of a lifetime is an understatement and I was delighted to collect a goblet at my first attempt arriving in Fort William with my good mate John Hamill (another first timer).  I believe we are the only runners in WHW history to finish in exactly the same time.

Race aim?

Last year was one of learning and simply getting across the finish line.  Many ups and downs along the way but managed to get in with John Hamill in 25 hours 50 minutes.  This year I would ideally like to go sub 23 hours with the aim of starting and finishing on the same day.  If it happens it happens but so much can go wrong I’ll be happy to get across the line before the goblets are handed out.
