I am Kevin Mottram from Newmachar in Aberdeenshire, I am married to Nicola and we have 2 boys Callan 9 & Harry 4.
Well this all started as a point to prove to a friend Stephen Forde who was running the WHW race in 2011/12 that I would be a good choice to be his support runner. I decided to run the D33 with very little training in 2012 to confirm that I still had it!! rest assured I was in quite a state but I had the Ultra bug.
I ran the D33 in 2013 and I noticed I had left ankle issues, I then took time out of running for 12 months to seek treatment. I had an operation on the ankle in Dec 2013 and was advised by a physio to stop running altogether but I am stubborn. I started to make plans to run again in 2014 but my recovery took muck longer than I anticipated so I set goals for 2015 and entered the Highland Fling as my ultimate running goal. Since 2015 I have been averaging 5 Scottish Ultras a year, all at a comfortable middle of the pack pace.
Why the WHW race?
I have been the support runner in the race twice now and I came up with an agreement with a good ultra-running buddy Gavin Taylor in 2016 that we would support each other if we we fortunate to get in. Gavin ran it in 2017, finishing the race in a very impressive time of 20h 21min. Gavin has now to endure that pain of support crewing along with another friend Neil Thom who will hopefully be making his Ultra debut in 2018 on the D33.
Another reason for wanting to run the route is in memory of my Grandad Billy, who loved the route after walking it, he used to tell me the stories of his time on the way.
Aim for the race?
A sub 24 hour if all is going well, and to run over the finishing line with my 2 boys.
